- Darlena L’Orange
The Chinese recognize a “fifth season” they call Doyo, which means “transition”. Doyo relates to the 2-3 week period before each season change, before the solstices and equinoxes. The Earth and its inhabitants are switching gears. Many find themselves less settled, unbalanced, or not feeling their best.
Traditional Chinese practitioners recommend emphasizing sweet flavors in the diet during the final, stale weeks of summer. Indulge in the fruits of summer before their time passes. Begin immune-boosting “sweet” herbs like astragalus, gingseng, and licorice. Try a light, cleansing fast to ready your body for the coming cold and flu months.
As the Autumn equinox passes, increase intake of spicy foods such as garlic, onions, leeks, scallions, horseradish, ginger, radish, mustard, cayenne, and black pepper. Warm, spicy herbs like cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, cardamom, thyme, sage, basil, rosemary, and fennel will likewise boost immunity.
A little extra attention to food choices, adequate sleep, and psyche will encourage smooth transitions ...
